Tips for First-Time Buyers Looking at Home Listings in Springfield

Buying a House vs. Apartment: The Pros and Cons

Often, people buy homes for the first time when they’ve just gotten married and are looking for something that both spouses will like. So this is a chance to find a place where you’ll be able to get to know each other better and do the things you like to do. Generally, first-time buyers will go for an apartment, especially if they’re living in an urban area. But it’s not unusual for them to consider a reasonably priced house as well. If you’re a first-time buyer looking at home listings in Springfield, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Apartment vs. house. Generally, if you’re a first-time buyer, you want to minimize the hassle of ownership as much as you can, and this is best done by getting an apartment. Sure, you’ll have to do a certain amount of maintenance yourself, but a great deal will be taken care of by the management company in charge of your building. Generally, anything that’s within the apartment is your responsibility while anything that’s in a common area is theirs. So keep in mind that if you buy an apartment, you’re responsible for a little less. If you get a house, you’re pretty much responsible for anything that goes wrong, from a busted boiler to a leak in the roof. Of course, if you’ve always wanted a house, don’t feel the need to compromise. Just be prepared for the maintenance issues that will come your way.
  2. What’s most important to you? Space or location. This might be oversimplifying things but generally, people have to choose between space and location. You can get a lot of space if you don’t mind being a little far from shops, restaurants etc. If, on the other hand, you need to be in the thick of things, then you’ll probably have to compromise in terms of space. Make sure that you don’t compromise too much on any one thing and have a balanced amount of both.
  3. Are prices rising or falling in the neighborhood? This can be easily ascertained with the help of your real estate agent. Since this is your first home, you’ll probably be trading up in a few years time. Even though something might seem ideal at one point of time, it’s likely that it won’t seem that way a few years later when your circumstances are different. So make sure that you’re buying a home which is also a good investment. That way, you’ll turn a tidy profit when it comes to selling it at a future date.
