- Begin with the bathrooms because this is the room everyone wants to use right away. Unpack all the toiletries as well as towels and bathrobes so you can wash away the sweat and dirt of moving at the end of the day. If you have any prescription medicines that you must take regularly, put those in the medicine cabinets.
- If you have children, do their rooms next, so they have a place to go. You want them out of the way of moving men and heavy furniture, especially if they are toddlers or younger. Older kids might be more excited to unpack their own spaces. Allow them to arrange their things however they like, subject to your approval.
- Unpack the master bedroom, including furniture, clothes, and cosmetics. Fix this area up as best you can because you want a place to retreat to while the rest of the house is still disorganized. It is also where you start your day.
- Save the kitchen for last because it usually has the most items in it. Don't worry about cooking meals right away – you can always order takeout or eat at restaurants. Set up your chairs and tables so you have a place to sit when you order pizza.
